This site is a gateway to full-text medical books available on the Internet. Access to the links is organized by medical specialty or language (English, Spanish or German). Many of the titles are relevant for health professionals in developing countries.

Helping Health Workers Learn  (Focus on Low-Income Countries)  (Spanish)  
The site links to the fulltext pdf. version of ‘Helping Health Workers Learn’, a book of methods, aids, and ideas for instructors at the village level. Including hundreds of drawing and photographs, it has been written for instructors and health workers who serve the underserved in developing countries. The material is available in Spanish and is authored by David Werner and Bill Bower.

Hesperian Foundation: Downloadable Books  (Focus on Low-Income Countries)  (Spanish)     
This site lists a series of primary care books specifically designed for health workers developing countries. As of December 2006, it contains the links to the fulltext (pdf) versions in English and Spanish: Where There Is No Doctor, Where Women Have No Doctor, HIV Health and Your Community, Helping Children Who are Blind, Helping Children Who are Deaf, A Book for Midwives, A Factory Worker’s Guide to Organizing for Safe Jobs and Health Communities, Where There Is No Dentist, Women’s Health Exchange: A Resource for Education and Training, and, in Spanish, Donde No Hay Doctor Para Mujeres. The material is published and updated by the Hesperian Foundation, a U.S. based NGO.

Landes Bioscience Handbooks
The Landes Bioscience website contains links to over 40 fulltext medical and surgical handbooks that are resources for practical information. Also available via Eurekah.com are over 1200 chapters of current research books. Access to the developing world is free but registration is required. Contact Sara Lord for registration information.

Medical Student.com: Textbooks
Medical Student.com is targeted mainly to students in North America and Europe, but is increasingly international in its scope. The textbooks section contains links to online textbooks by broad subject. The site itself is a digital library of authoritative medical information designed to help all students of medicine. Links to other sites are selected by a process of peer review.

Merck Manuals/Online Medical Library of Diagnosis and Therapy
The site includes the latest edition to the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, a basic clinical and pharmacological tool that provides useful clinical information to physicians, medical students, interns, residents, nurses, pharmacists, and other health-care professionals in a concise, complete, and accurate manner. The Merck Manual covers internal medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics, gynaecology, dermatology, pharmacology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and a number of specialist subjects.

Merck Manual of Geriatrics
The 2nd edition of this publication contains links from an extensive table of contents and a keyword search engine. The online version includes updates of selected topics since the 2000 publication.

NCBI Booklist 
The NCBI Bookshelf is a collection of free biomedical books. The E-Books are accessed by keyword searching and also are also linked to terms in PubMed abstracts. This service is maintained by the National Library of Medicine, U.S.
